Yeah, having a good product and having really good content is very important for SEO. Also the other points can have a big impact for SEO I would add to the list: 7. avoid broken links (especially 404 and 500 errors) - Search engines really don´t like to waste their time for this 8. Be inteligent with internal linking - The number of links to a page also counts. Identfy your most important pages and increase the number of links to these pages to get these sites higher ranked in Google

I agree... Having a good product is really a key underlying factor. If you go out there and build the best-of-breed product, no matter what people will link to you. I think all things being equal, links outweigh anything else. If you were to only do one thing, get links!
